Windows 98 temp files

As my pc is running something is causing windows to create
MANY temp files (sometimes several thousand). After being
on for several hours windows 98 slows down dramatically.
I have run window washer and see that it has deleted
anywhere from around 100 to over 10000 windows temp
files. Any ideas on what might be causing this and a fix?
Thanks,
jbk

In what folder are these files being created?
Give an example of on of the typical files' names, including the file extension.
What is running in the background when they are being made?
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and post back with what is listed there, along with the answers to the other questions.

Hi,
I've been checking into the Temp file situation and I can
tell you the following:
As far as I can tell all of the files are in the Windows
Temp folder and all have the .tmp extension. Most of the
names have the exact same format which is Wk_****.tmp
where the **** is some combination of numbers and letters.
The majority contain 3 numbers and one letter eg.
Wk_151b.tmp but some have 4 numbers and others have 2
numbers and 2 letters. When I leave the windows temp
folder opened I can watch the files being added and it
seems that there may be a pattern whereby the temp files
seem to have sucessive letters of the alphabet going from
a to f in successive files eg. Wk_43a5.tmp, Wk_242b.tmp,
Wk_34c5.tmp, Wk_1d31.tmp etc. The pattern does not hold
absolutely but it gives the impression of some
alphabetical sequencing. Also, I cannot see any set
pattern as to where the numbers and letters fall within
the **** sequence.
As for what is running in the background the list is as
follows: Creative launcher, Explorer, Hpzstatx, Hpzstcol,
Medindet, Swtray, osa, exe, win32us, Ctnotify, Qttask,
systray, wsloader, Hpztsb01, Ahqtb, Qwdlls, Imgicon. I
hope that you can see something in all of this and perhaps
can help me. Thanks in advance!

Get rid of these, using the manual removal procedures on the associated web pages -

win32us:
http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/m/mss.asp
and
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ToolbarCC.html

exe:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/***@mm.html
and
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/RapidBlaster.html

I do not know what this one is: Medindet

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.

In addition, install Ad-Aware 6 free edition, start it, click its 'Check for Updates' link in the app to install updates, then use it to scan your system, and remove what it finds.
Ad-Aware:

Download, unzip and run Hijack This, but don't remove anything with it yet:
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
Follow the instructions at this Tutorial:
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
to save the log files and paste them into a new post at one of these forums:

As a side note, have a look here about Hpzstatx:
